Politics -- and this is competence?

So, soldiers in Kuwait, preparing for deployment into Iraq have to dig around in landfills to pull together ad hoc armor. Nice to see a soldier talking back to Rumsfeld. Apparently, he asked for questions, said he was prepared for the tough ones … shockingly, some of these young men thought he meant it.

BUT … (quoting here from Angry Bear: http://angrybear.blogspot.com/2004/12/inside-army-on-humvee-protective.html ) let’s think about what this tells us. Hmmm. We know that Bush-Rumsfeld were planning to invade Iraq BEFORE the 2000 election. Soon after 9/11 (late 2001, remember) this was a public discussion. In March, 2003, Bush warned Hussein that the US would invade “at a time of our choosing”.

So: funding for add-on armor for the humvees was NOT in the bills that funded the war in Iraq. When was the supplemental spending on humvee armor requested? August, 2004.

"Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said that he was responsible for the abuse of the Iraqi prisoners. And today President Bush said the abuse was cruel and disgraceful and an affront to the most basic standards of morality and decency. And then he told Rumsfeld that he was doing a superb job. Then Rumsfeld said, 'What the hell do I gotta do to get fired?'" —Jay Leno
